Assistant Plant Operator

About the role

The Assistant Plant Operator supports the Materials Handling team at a coal‑fired power plant, ensuring safe, efficient and environmentally responsible handling of coal, ash, diesel and related equipment. You will work on‑site, performing daily checks, operating equipment, and assisting with auxiliary operations.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee coal and ash handling processes, including ship unloaders, stackers/reclaimers, conveyors, dust suppression systems and diesel tanks.
• Conduct pre‑start checks, functional testing, identify defects and raise maintenance work orders in the CMMS.
• Apply health, safety and environmental policies, permit‑to‑work (PTW) and LOTO procedures, and respond to emergencies.
• Monitor for spontaneous combustion risks, coal spillages and housekeeping issues; coordinate with operators to mitigate hazards.
• Unload diesel fuel tankers, record tank levels and operate assigned material‑handling vehicles.
• Maintain daily checklists, log sheets and reports using Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Provide theoretical and practical training to new field operators and hand over equipment status to the next shift.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in any Engineering discipline.
• Minimum of 1 year experience in a coal‑fired power plant or related industry (e.g., mining).
• Valid driver’s license; PRC license is a plus.

Required skills

• Ability to monitor systems via MMI (Man‑Machine Interface).
• Proficiency with materials‑handling equipment and control panels.
• Experience creating work orders in a CMMS and preparing reports in Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Safe operation of material‑handling vehicles.
