Assistant Plant Operator

About the role

The Assistant Plant Operator supports the Materials Handling team at a coal‑fired power plant, ensuring safe, efficient and environmentally responsible handling of coal, ash and diesel. This on‑site position involves operating and monitoring a range of handling equipment and assisting with auxiliary operations.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee coal and ash handling processes, including ship unloaders, stackers/reclaimers, conveyors, dust suppression systems and diesel tanks.
• Perform pre‑start checks, functional testing, identify equipment defects and raise maintenance work orders in the CMMS.
• Apply health, safety and environmental policies, implement Permit‑to‑Work (PTW) and LOTO procedures, and respond to emergencies.
• Monitor daily for spontaneous combustion risks, coal spillages and housekeeping issues, coordinating with operators to mitigate hazards.
• Unload diesel fuel tankers, record tank levels and operate assigned material‑handling vehicles.
• Maintain daily checklists, log sheets and time records; document operational parameters and prepare reports using Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Provide theoretical and practical training to new field operators and hand over equipment status to the next shift.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in any Engineering discipline.
• Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience in a coal‑fired power plant or related industry (e.g., mining).
• Valid driver’s license; PRC license is an advantage.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MMI (Man‑Machine Interface) system for monitoring operations.
• Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to raise work orders.
• Competence in operating material‑handling equipment and control panels.
• Ability to operate material‑handling vehicles safely.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel for reporting.
