Staff Engineer – Tribology Characterization & Test Development

About the role

Western Digital is seeking a Staff Engineer to lead tribology characterization and test development for hard‑disk‑drive (HDD) spacing control. You will design, execute, and analyze experiments that evaluate new HDD designs, driving reliability and performance improvements.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and run tests using advanced spacing, tribology, and metrology tools.
• Apply statistical analysis to interpret experimental data and generate insights.
• Produce comprehensive reports and recommend design enhancements.
• Develop automation scripts to streamline data processing and reporting.
• Lead projects, ensure timelines are met, and oversee daily tester operations.
• Refine test methodologies for evolving HDD architectures.
• Identify and resolve system‑related challenges.
• Collaborate with global teams on spacing characterization initiatives.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Applied Physics, Physics, Materials Science & Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 3 years of professional experience in tribology, physical characterization, and metrology.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Proven ability to work cross‑functionally and lead technical teams.
