Design Unit Manager

About the role

The Design Unit Manager will lead a multidisciplinary team of Design Engineers, BIM Modellers and CAD Specialists to deliver high‑quality structural and geotechnical designs for marine and coastal infrastructure projects. This senior position requires technical expertise, strong leadership, and coordination across design, QA/QC, construction and project control functions.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and manage the design team, providing technical guidance and ensuring timely project delivery.
• Implement design management and quality assurance systems in line with the SJ/SMEC Business Management System and relevant standards.
• Oversee all structural and geotechnical design activities, including review of contractor submissions.
• Prepare and deliver technical presentations to clients, contractors and government authorities.
• Coordinate with QA/QC, construction management and project control teams on design‑related matters.
• Prepare and approve correspondence on design and geotechnical instrumentation issues.
• Deliver engineering services for revetments, shoreline protection, ports, harbours and related marine facilities.
• Design soil improvement, geotechnical stability and coastal protection works, as well as foundations and superstructure elements in concrete and steel.
• Ensure compliance with British Standards, ASTM, and Philippines civil engineering standards.
• Review and approve design reports, specifications and tender documents.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering from a recognized university.
• Minimum ten years of experience in large‑scale infrastructure or reclamation projects.
• Proven experience leading multidisciplinary design teams.
