Lawyer – Marine Biodiversity Conservation

About the role

ClientEarth is seeking a qualified lawyer with experience in marine biodiversity conservation to support its Food Systems, Ocean and Land Use (FOLU) programme in the Philippines and Indonesia. The role is remote, based in Manila, and will last for one year with the possibility of extension.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to the development and implementation of regional strategy for marine biodiversity conservation.
• Conduct in‑depth legal research on marine protected areas, other effective area‑based conservation measures, IUU fishing, and supply‑chain due‑diligence regulations.
• Analyse the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework and the 30x30 target in the Philippines/Indonesia.
• Engage with government agencies, NGOs, industry stakeholders and traditional knowledge holders to build partnerships.
• Draft policy briefs, legal opinions, reports and advocacy materials.
• Present findings internally and externally to diverse audiences.

Required profile

• Law degree with admission to practice in the Philippines (or equivalent qualification).
• Demonstrated experience in marine biodiversity or environmental law, preferably in the Philippines and/or Indonesia.
• Strong knowledge of marine protected area governance, IUU fishing regulations and biodiversity policy frameworks.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
• Ability to work independently in a remote setting.

• Understanding of marine biodiversity legislation and international environmental agreements.

What we offer

• Annual compensation of ₱2,100,000.
• Remote work based in Manila.
• One‑year fixed‑term contract with potential extension based on performance and funding.
