Deconversion Consultant

About the role

The Deconversion Consultant manages the end‑to‑end process of plan deconversions, plan‑to‑plan transfers, and terminations for a variety of retirement and benefit plans. Acting as the primary liaison between Empower, plan sponsors, financial advisors, and third‑party administrators, the consultant ensures smooth transitions and compliance throughout each project.

Key responsibilities

• Lead successful deconversions, plan‑to‑plan transfers, and terminations across all plan segments.
• Serve as the main point of contact for Empower during each project, coordinating with sponsors, advisors, and recordkeepers.
• Conduct weekly conference calls to discuss timelines, outstanding items, and critical tasks.
• Review and validate test files (fund and participant data) with stakeholders.
• Facilitate asset and record transfers through written and verbal communication.
• Maintain internal deadlines, ensure quality assurance, and follow risk‑mitigation procedures.
• Manage blackout periods, liquidations, and final file submissions.
• Work extended hours during peak periods and handle additional ad‑hoc projects.

Required profile

• Associate degree in Business or equivalent experience.
• 1‑2 years of experience in deconversion, plan‑to‑plan transfer, or termination activities.
• Strong knowledge of IRS codes (e.g., 457, 401(k), 403(b), 401(a)) and IRS/DOL reporting requirements.
• Understanding of regulatory compliance and plan documentation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• High attention to detail and strong time‑management abilities.
• Willingness to work overtime during high‑volume periods.
