Backhoe Operator

About the role

The Backhoe Operator is responsible for operating a range of heavy construction equipment to support excavation, earth‑moving and site‑preparation tasks. The role involves ensuring equipment is ready, safe and maintained while working on civil, utility or public‑works projects.

Key responsibilities

• Operate backhoes, excavators, bulldozers, loaders and graders to dig trenches, move earth, load materials and grade surfaces.
• Perform pre‑operational checks, routine maintenance and basic repairs to keep equipment clean, lubricated and functional.
• Read and interpret blueprints, maps and project specifications to execute work accurately.
• Assist with traffic control, site restoration and emergency response activities such as water‑main breaks or storm damage.

Required profile

• 2–5 years of experience operating backhoes or similar heavy equipment on civil, utility or public‑works projects.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations.
