National Medical Officer (Occupational Health)

About the role

The National Medical Officer will provide occupational health services and support to IOM employees and eligible non‑staff across Africa, North America, Latin America and the Caribbean. Reporting to the Chief Medical Officer and working closely with the Director of the Staff Health and Welfare Division in Geneva, the role ensures medical fitness, insurance coordination, and health‑related case management.

Key responsibilities

• Review and assess medical examinations for all staff and non‑staff, determining fitness for work, required accommodations, and mobility.
• Record examination data in dedicated software, analyze health trends, and propose health‑promotion interventions.
• Evaluate insurance eligibility, manage exclusions, and coordinate extended coverage with the Insurance Unit in Manila and Geneva.
• Assist the Regional Medical Officer in reviewing occupational accident and illness claims, categorizing injuries, and preparing final reports.
• Manage sick‑leave documentation, ensure accurate data entry in Earthmed, and develop return‑to‑work plans for prolonged absences.
• Collaborate with Staff Welfare on mental‑health cases and prepare recommendations for special education grants and disability allowances.

Required profile

• Medical degree with a focus on occupational health or related field.
• Experience assessing fitness for work, handling medical insurance matters, and managing occupational injury cases.
• Strong knowledge of confidentiality standards and international health regulations.
• Ability to work across multiple regions and coordinate with remote teams.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Earthmed medical software.
