Outpatient Coding Trainer

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Outpatient Coding Trainer to design, deliver, and evaluate training programs for outpatient medical coders. The role focuses on Emergency Department, Same Day Surgery, and Observation coding, ensuring high accuracy, productivity, and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and facilitate instructor‑led and virtual training for outpatient coders.
• Deliver comprehensive training on ED, SDS, and OBS coding, covering ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and coding guidelines.
• Onboard new hires and provide ongoing education for existing staff.
• Assess trainee performance through coding exercises, knowledge tests, and competency evaluations.
• Provide individualized coaching and feedback to improve accuracy and productivity.
• Maintain training materials, job aids, reference guides, and SOPs.
• Stay current with coding updates, payer regulations, CMS guidelines, and incorporate changes into training.
• Partner with QA, Operations, and Coding Leadership to identify gaps and implement targeted initiatives.
• Analyze audit findings, create action plans, and track training effectiveness.

Required profile

• Active CPC and COC certification.
• Minimum 5 years outpatient coding experience (ED, SDS, OBS).
• At least 2 years experience as a coding trainer, educator, or L&D specialist.
• Strong knowledge of ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, CMS guidelines, NCCI edits, and payer‑specific requirements.
• Experience with EHR systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech.
• Excellent presentation, facilitation, coaching, and communication skills.
• Analytical mindset with a focus on continuous improvement.
