IBMi Engineer – IT Infrastructure & System Administration

About the role

The IBMi Engineer serves as the technical expert for the IBM i environment, ensuring security, stability, performance, and availability. The role drives platform modernization through integration with cloud, API, and open‑source technologies while supporting business continuity and strategic initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Administer, maintain, and support multiple IBM i partitions (LPARs) on Power Systems, including OS upgrades, PTF maintenance, and firmware updates.
• Manage backup and recovery using BRMS, virtual tape libraries, remote replication, and disaster‑recovery solutions.
• Design, implement, and maintain high‑availability and disaster‑recovery architectures to meet service availability targets.
• Monitor and optimize system performance, including CPU, memory, storage, I/O, and workload management.
• Implement IBM i security controls, user access management, authority structures, and system auditing.
• Develop automation scripts and integrations using CL, SQL, RPG/ILE, and open‑source tools such as Python or Node.js.
• Provide top‑level technical escalation for complex incidents, lead root‑cause analysis, and support on‑call rotations.
• Participate in change management, planning, testing, and validation of infrastructure changes.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with at least 4 years of hands‑on IBM i (OS/400, i5/OS) administration.
• Proven experience with IBM i version 7.3 or higher, high‑availability, disaster‑recovery, and BRMS backup strategies.
• Strong knowledge of IBM i networking, TCP/IP, TLS, and IBM MQ environments.
• Experience with PowerVM, VIOS, NPIV, and virtualized Power Systems is preferred.
• IBM Certified System Administrator – IBMi or equivalent certification is a plus.
