Economist Consultant (Microeconomics & Causal Inference)

About the role

IDinsight engages economists as consultants to provide specialist expertise in applied microeconomics and causal inference across a portfolio of client engagements in multiple geographies and sectors. The consultant will work independently to design rigorous research, advise on methodological trade‑offs, and deliver actionable guidance within client constraints.

Key responsibilities

• Design and advise on evaluations and research activities, focusing on identification strategy, estimation, and interpretation.
• Draft and review technical documents such as evaluation designs, pre‑analysis plans, power calculations, data collection instruments, and analysis code.
• Provide technical capacity building, including training on causal inference, statistical inference, and Stata/R programming.
• Offer scoping support by assessing technical feasibility and design of prospective engagements.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in economics, econometrics, applied statistics, or a related quantitative field (PhD preferred).
• Demonstrated command of causal inference and applied microeconometrics, including experimental and quasi‑experimental designs.
• At least 5 years of post‑graduate experience designing, executing, or advising on evaluations in low‑ and middle‑income contexts.
• Proficiency in Stata or R sufficient to write, review, and debug analysis code.
• Ability to produce clear technical written output for non‑technical decision‑makers.
• Capacity to work independently against agreed deliverables and flag methodological concerns early.
